The Quebec government is bringing back its Écocamionnage rebate program for electric medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

The return of the program — with a $415-million budget over five years — was confirmed in the province’s new 2025–2030 Implementation Plan for the Green Economy Plan.

The updated funding represents an $85 million increase compared to the previous allocations to the program.

The Écocamionnage Program was temporarily suspended in September 2024 following what the government described as “exceptional enthusiasm” and an overwhelming volume of applications.

Building on passenger vehicle momentum

In 2024 alone, Quebec registered over 125,000 new EVs, bringing the number of EVs in the province to more than 375,000. (Zero-emission vehicles made up 30.9 per cent of all new light-duty vehicle sales last year.)

Programs such as Roulez vert, which currently offers $4,000 in purchase incentives, along with the province’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) standard, are credited with playing a major role in this growth.

“The success of this program, combined with the introduction of the ZEV standard… has made it possible to exceed the targets set for the number of EVs on the road, and to stimulate motorists’ enthusiasm for electromobility,” the government said in its report.

That success, the province adds, is allowing Quebec to “gradually redeploy financial support to other segments of the transportation sector.”

Expanding support for electrification

Quebec’s electrification strategy goes beyond commercial trucks.

The Quebec government is investing $3.9 billion over five years in the transportation sector. Some of the government’s initiatives include:

  • $433.1 million for the installation of home, multi-dwelling and workplace charging stations;
  • $5.9 million to support the deployment of charging;
  • $53.5 million to support the installation of on-road and off-grid charging stations;
  • $308.4 million for the private sector support program for public fast charging stations;
  • $709.1 million to support the electrification of municipal buses; and
  • $459 million to support the electrification of school buses.

For 2025–2026, the government will launch a new funding program for multi-unit residential buildings. The goal is to help upgrade the electrical infrastructure so residents can install EV charging stations.

This initiative supports a key provincial target: ensuring that 35 per cent of parking spaces in multi-unit buildings are EV-ready by 2030.

It also aligns with upcoming building regulations from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, which would require charging infrastructure in all new buildings with five or more units.
