Ontario is gaining a second investment from Taiwan-based EV parts supplier, Minth Group and this time it’s with a new partner.
In a joint venture partnership with Japan-headquartered AISIN Corporation, Minth Group is pledging to open a 150,000 square foot facility that will supply “key aluminum, steel, and polymer-based parts for electric vehicle platforms across North America,” Invest WindsorEssex wrote in a press release.
This is the second factory Minth Group is bringing to Windsor. The first was a $300-million battery casing factory announced in April.
“This signing celebrates the continued commitment of Minth to Canada and Windsor. With the addition of AISIN, the combined resources and talent will provide a tremendous team to support growth for decades to come,” says William Chin, chief strategy officer at Minth Group.
AISIN has an existing facility in Stratford, Ont., that supplies various parts to Toyota’s Ontario factories.
Windsor is already home to many different EV supply chain players in Ontario.
Most notably is Stellantis and LG Energy Solution’s $5-billion NextStar EV battery manufacturing facility. However there are also many Tier One and Two suppliers as well as supporting post-secondary institutions that focus on R&D, the city (and region) is a provincial hub.
“We are excited to see this latest investment by Minth Group, this time as part of a joint venture with AISIN, in Windsor and the surrounding region,” says Drew Dilkens, Windsor’s mayor and the board chair of Invest WindsorEssex, in press comments.
“The partnership…will have positive ripple effects across our region, further solidifying our status as the Automotive and Automobility Capital of Canada, driving future growth and development, and ensuring that Windsor-Essex remains one of the most important communities to watch in Ontario and Canada.”
The latest venture between AISIN and Minth is expected to bring “hundreds of new high-quality jobs” to the area, which builds off the supplier’s previous commitment of 1,099 new jobs connected to their battery casing factory.
Construction has already begun on that facility, while the Minth/ASIN factory will soon begin its build out.
No timeline was provided for when the factories will come online.
