A road trip or a commute can be stressful enough without worrying that your vehicle may not be up to handling the drive.

Electric vehicles are a new technology and with them comes some apprehension about their reliability and capabilities.

The short answer is this: EVs can go the distance. It just takes a little planning to do so.

How far does an electric car go?

Electric vehicles offer varying ranges. Some are just over 100km while others hit over 800km.

The Kona Electric has a battery range of 415km and a battery capacity of 64.0 kWh.

The Ioniq 5 has a range of 410-488km and a battery capacity of 77.4 kWh.

The Ioniq 6 has a range of 435 to 581km and a battery capacity of 77.4 kWh.

Are there enough charging stations?

The public charging network across Canada has approximately 9,873 chargers as of 2023. The government is targeting supporting 84,500 charging stations by 2029.

There are enough charging stations to get comfortably from one end of the Trans-Canada Highway to the other.

Where are charging stations?

Charging stations are distributed across Canada, but the greatest concentration is in urban areas with high EV adoption and along major transportation corridors.

Northern regions across Canada are still considered under-served by charging networks, but there are many ongoing initiatives to improve access to charging in all areas of Canada.

What affects range?

EV range is impacted by a variety of factors including external temperature, the use of climate control features in the cabin, if a driver elects to pre-condition their vehicle before driving, driving style and EV-specific tires.

Does an electric car have enough range?

For the average Canadian commuter EVs have more than enough range to meeting driving requirements in between overnight charging.

In the rare occasions when drivers are going farther distances advance route planning to locate chargers (and back-ups in case one location is busy or out of service) along the way is recommended.

But, for most driver needs, Hyundai’s EVs exceed range needs while also ensuring a safe, quiet and zero-emission free drive.
