The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is partnering with NL Hydro to add 14 new ultra-fast EV chargers in 2026 following a surge in demand in 2024-25.

Under the terms of the deal, the province will provide $3.8 million to support the expansion, while NL Hydro will contribute $463,000.

“There are now 1,700 battery electric vehicles registered in Newfoundland and Labrador — a 1,400 per cent increase over the past decade,” said Scott Reid, minister of environment and climate change, in a press statement.

“Increasing access to the number of Ultra-Fast electric vehicle chargers across the province ensures we have the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the growing EV community and goes hand-in-hand with our commitment to lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce our carbon footprint and work collaboratively with our partners to create a greener transportation sector.”

Road transportation accounted for 44 per cent of Newfoundland and Labrador’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2023.

Chargers coming to Southern Labrador

The 14 new public chargers will be distributed across multiple sites, including four chargers coming to two locations in Southern Labrador — a first for the region.

Sites were chosen in response to high demand at existing stations in St. John’s East, Carbonear, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook and Hawke’s Bay.

The Labrador sites will be in L’Anse-au-Loup and Port Hope Simpson, each receiving two chargers. NL Hydro is accepting applications from businesses interested in hosting.

These chargers are in addition to the 11 ultra-fast EV chargers announced earlier this year and scheduled to open by the end of 2025. Once all sites are operational, the province will have 62 fast-chargers — 21 of them of the ultra-fast variety.

There are also more than 220 public- and private sector-owned Level 2 charging ports across the province.
