A new security solution aims to protecting electric vehicle charging infrastructure from vandalism and theft in multi-unit residential buildings.
SWTCH Energy announced today the launch of a suite of anti-theft and vandalism technologies. The solution includes compact cameras and lighting units that deliver 24/7 remote monitoring, 180-degree wide-angle surveillance and motion-activated deterrents.
“With rising reports of EV charging station vandalism and cable theft, multifamily and commercial properties face financial threats while EV drivers experience diminished confidence in charging availability,” says the Toronto-based smart EV charging solution provider in a press release.
“Property managers need reliable tools to stay ahead of these risks and maintain consistent charging access,” says Carter Li, CEO at SWTCH Energy.
“Our new anti-theft and vandalism solutions incorporate AI technology that functions like a virtual security guard—giving property managers flexible, proactive tools that protect infrastructure, minimize downtime, and strengthen driver confidence in the EV transition.”
SWTCH’s new solution combines advanced vision AI technology with hardware-based defences to create a round-the-clock smart security network.
The camera units do not require any major infrastructure upgrades and can be installed on existing poles or walls.
Among the solution’s key features is a presence-sensing recording, where cameras automatically detect when individuals approach a charger and trigger a visible surveillance cue that is an immediate deterrent to potential theft or vandalism.
The system’s smart threat detection uses AI to distinguish between typical charging behaviour and suspicious activity. This helps to prevent false alarms while ensuring real-time responses to real threats.
In case of a real security threat, the intelligent escalation feature enables the system to automatically shift from passive monitoring to active interventions by communicating warnings through built-in speakers or contacting property management teams and local authorities.
In addition, SWTCH’s instant cable cut detection employs sensors that can identify tampering attempts. Each charger comes equipped with a cord prevention sleeve designed to resist cutting tools and deter theft attempts.
SWTCH says it is currently working to expand this detection capability across all charger models.
