This third electric offering from Chevrolet this year comes in at a competitive price point, with the full lineup for the Equinox EV expected to be available in Canada by Spring 2024

General Motors has unveiled its first-ever all-electric 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, at a pocket-friendly starting price of $37,250 for the base 1LT trim level.

The Equinox EV is the third electric vehicle from General Motors, joining the full-sized Chevrolet Silverado EV truck and midsize Blazer EV SUV already announced earlier this year. Equinox was intentionally priced by the automakers to be one of the most price-competitive and affordable electric vehicles in the compact SUV class segment.

“We are at a turning point where EVs will be the mainstream choice for the next generation of customers and Equinox EV will lead this charge for us,” said Mary Barra, chair and CEO of General Motors in a press statement. “With the flexibility of GM’s Ultium Platform, we are bringing to market vehicles at nearly every price point and for every purpose.”

The five-seater compact SUV’s complete trim lineup also includes the 2LT, 3LT, 2RS and 3RS. GM has not yet announced the Canadian pricing of those trims.

The 1LT may be eligible for federal and provincial incentive programs in Canada (subject to final government approvals) which would bring the price down to a minimum of $25,250 for some Canadians.

The Equinox EV will be available in Canada in limited quantities in the 2RS trim level starting next fall. The full lineup of the vehicle is expected to be available by spring 2024.

Tech and capabilities

In terms of exterior design, the Equinox EV line is similar in appearance to Chevrolet’s gas-powered Equinox. But inside the electric Equinox has Ultium-based propulsion technologies, features a large infotainment screen and offers several driver assistance technologies such as Adaptive Cruise Control and HD Surround Vision, with a Head-Up Display and Rear Camera Mirror.

All models can enable Super Cruise, which allows drivers to go hands-free on almost 650,000 km of compatible roads in Canada and the U.S.

The front-wheeled-drive 1LT model with the standard battery has an estimated range of 400 kilometres. The longer-range model can reach ranges up to 480 km.

Through to the 2LT and 3LT trim levels and onto the top-tier 2RS and 3RS trim levels, the range stays the same at 480 km for FWD and 450 km for AWD.

The Equinox EV offers standard Level 2 AC charging speeds at 11.5 kW and 19.2 kW on the 3RS eAWD. For DC fast charging, Equinox has charging speeds of up to 150 kW and can add almost 115 km of range in 10 minutes, GM claims.

Additionally, customers have access to GM’s Ultium Charge 360 app, which provides information on and access to more than 110,000 publicly accessible charging stations in Canada and the U.S. and is intended to make the charging experience simpler.
