One-day deliveries in the Greater Vancouver area are about to get greener after Amazon announced the deployment of its first fleet of electric delivery vans in Canada.

The fleet is comprised of 50 custom-built electric vans manufactured by Rivian.

“Amazon has always been committed to offering the fastest delivery speeds for our customers and it’s tremendously exciting to now launch our first major initiative targeting the decarbonization of our local delivery fleet,” says Eva Lorenz, vice president and country manager, Amazon Canada, in a press statement.

“We know that investing in solutions that reduce our impact on the environment also has benefits for our customers, employees and business partners.”

The new electric vans will operate out of Amazon’s DYV1 delivery station in Delta, B.C. Two local Amazon Delivery Service Partners will incorporate the vans into their routes.

Inside Rivian electric vans

The custom-built Rivian vans stem from Amazon’s partnership with the American automaker, established in 2019. (Amazon is also Rivian’s largest shareholder.)

“[This announcement] marks an exciting milestone in our five-year history of operations in Canada,” says Tom Solomon, Rivian’s vice president of B2B growth and business development. “The Rivian electric delivery van is unlike anything else on the market. We’ve engineered this vehicle to be the superior choice for fleets, intentionally integrating safety, comfort, and sustainability into every detail.”

Each Rivian van is built for safety and efficiency, featuring 360-degree visibility, sensor detection, a panoramic windshield, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and collision warnings.

The vehicles include embedded technology that integrates Amazon’s delivery systems directly with the van’s controls, giving drivers streamlined access to routing, navigation, package organization and support tools.

For comfort and ease of use, the vans feature automatic door locking and unlocking, a powered bulkhead door that opens at delivery stops, ventilated seats and an ergonomically designed cabin and cargo area.

Long-term sustainability goals

This Canadian deployment is part of Amazon’s broader sustainability strategy aligned with The Climate Pledge, a global commitment the company co-founded in 2019 to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

To date, Amazon has deployed more than 35,000 electric delivery vehicles worldwide. Together, these EVs have delivered over 1.5 billion packages globally.

The long-term goal is to have more 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian on roads worldwide by 2030.

“This initiative reflects Amazon’s broader mission to build a transportation network that works for our customers, our communities, and our planet,” says Jasmin Begagic, director of Amazon Logistics (AMZL) Canada.
